The ESRI report on skills requirements for emerging technologies in Ireland explores the effect of automation, AI, and blockchain technologies on the Irish labour market. AI and automation are identified as having the most significant employment implications for Ireland, with blockchain mentioned as an emerging area of interest.

The report finds that, while Ireland’s education sector is meeting current market demands, future regulatory changes, particularly in AI, could substantially increase the demand for specific skills. One of the core findings is the importance of not just technical competencies, but also transversal skills like problem-solving, business management, and critical thinking. The study emphasizes the need for policy development to support upskilling and reskilling efforts, particularly in areas like cloud computing, AI, and cybersecurity, where the demand for skilled workers is expected to grow significantly.

The use of micro-credentials and interdisciplinary approaches to education are suggested as ways to quickly align academic programmes with industry needs. The report stresses the importance of ongoing adaptation in education and training programs to avoid future skills mismatches.
