The digital and green transitions are rapidly transforming skill requirements across sectors, necessitating significant upskilling and reskilling for Europeans. Cedefop’s analysis, aligned with Europe’s Digital Decade Programme, examines the impact of digitalisation and digital skills on employment.

Digital transformation will create jobs in computer programming, R&D, telecommunications, wholesale, retail trade, and education. While AI enhances labour productivity, allowing workers to take on more fulfilling activities, it will also replace some human tasks, especially in wholesale and retail trade and construction, potentially reducing employment in these areas.

The speed of AI and automation deployment adds uncertainty to employment projections. Significant investment in digital and AI skills training is crucial for navigating the digital transition successfully. High-skill job opportunities will increase, but overall employment may decline due to automation.

Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive digital skills education and lifelong learning. Organisations must foster a culture of continuous learning and support employees in adapting to technological changes. AI-powered training can enhance learning outcomes, while well-being and mental health support can help workers manage stress.

Overall, the forecast highlights the potential for AI-driven productivity and employment gains. Policies leveraging these gains can stimulate economic growth, potentially outweighing negative impacts and ensuring a competitive, knowledge-driven European economy.
