With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) in the field of education, teachers will be mentors rather than lecturers, Krasimir Stoev, software technology training specialist, who was a lecturer at a seminar for principals and teachers from Varna on how to work with Chat GPT, told BTA. The main organizer of the meeting was the Center for Creative Training in partnership with the Regional Education Management in the seaside town.

Artificial intelligence is an assistant – both to teachers and students, whether it is used to the service or to the detriment depends on the user, Stoev said. According to him, the big fears that AI will conquer the world are not justified, because it is not an autonomous unit and can not give unsolicited content. Teachers should encourage and navigate the use of artificial intelligence so that students can get the best, Stoev said. He specified that a few days ago the Ministry of Education and Science has given guidelines to promote the use of AI in the education system, which will be disseminated to all principals and teachers. Stoev himself participated in the working group that developed the guidelines and specified that they provide for educators to use AI to generate content, create tasks, control, and verify them. This will alleviate the huge daily burden that prevents teachers from paying individual attention to their students, Stoev said.

When asked how educators would “catch” children that their homework is made by AI, especially in science, the expert pointed out that there is a need to change the way they test. In the new reality, the approaches must change, the goal of teachers should not be to see properly solved tasks, but properly developed skills, because the tasks are actually a means of increasing the expertise of children, Stoev said. He was adamant that the modern digital generation should be given information in an adequate way. Stoev added that as a teacher he asked AI to generate a lesson in bee biology and received a story about how insects have a built-in GPS system and thus find hives, how they tag and like colors and fragrances. Artificial intelligence uses words that young people find intelligible and interesting, and any teacher can benefit from this, the expert explained. He added that AI capabilities can be used in any subject, including physical and drawing.

According to Stoev, in the future teachers will have the task of giving their students the so-called soft skills – to pass on experience, valuable advice, to motivate and encourage them, to teach them discipline. The expert’s position was that AI could be actively used by children after 5th grade, by which time they should build skills for debate, for expressing their opinions with arguments. However, there are no obstacles for teachers to be good users of AI, and those in kindergartens can use it to generate games, Stoev summarized.
