The European High-Performance Computing Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) has officially launched the DIGITAL-EUROHPC-JU-2024-MASTER-03 call, inviting proposals to create a ground-breaking pan-European Master of Science (MSc) programme in High-Performance Computing (HPC). This initiative aligns with the European Union’s Digital Decade targets for 2030 and aims to meet the growing demand for skilled HPC professionals across Europe.
The program, building on the success of the EUMaster4HPC pilot, will train over 100 students annually in cutting-edge fields such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, HPC system architecture, and computational modeling. The six-year project will provide a comprehensive and advanced curriculum tailored to industry needs, equipping students with the skills to drive Europe’s digital transformation.
Key highlights of the call
The call emphasizes a pan-European scope with an annual intake of over 100 students, requiring mobility between at least two European countries to foster cross-border collaboration. The program’s advanced curriculum includes modules on HPC platform design, operations, software development, and cutting-edge applications in AI and quantum computing. Industry collaboration is a cornerstone of the initiative, with students engaging in lectures, mentorship programs, and thesis opportunities supported by leading industry players. Additionally, a minimum of €3 million has been allocated for mobility grants, with individual awards ranging from €5,000 to €15,000 to support students as they pursue their studies across Europe.
Advancing Digital Skills across Europe
This initiative is part of the EU’s broader efforts to enhance digital education and skills development, as outlined in the Digital Decade 2030 targets. With Europe striving to employ 20 million ICT specialists by 2030, the program addresses a critical skills gap in HPC—a field essential for advancements in climate modelling, drug discovery, and AI. By fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and public institutions, the initiative will ensure that the European workforce remains competitive in the global digital economy
Timeline and application process
The call for proposals is open until May 14, 2025, at 17:00 (CEST). Eligible applicants include universities, research institutions, and consortia. Detailed application guidelines are available on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. For more details, visit the EuroHPC website.
