Since 1992, the United Nations has promoted the International Day of Persons with Disabilities to raise awareness and understanding of disability-related issues. Observed globally, on the 3rd of December the day highlights the importance of supporting the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. The day also emphasizes the benefits of including persons with disabilities in all areas of life—political, social, economic, and cultural. Each year, it focuses on a specific theme, addressing different aspects of disability inclusion and advocacy.
2024 Theme: Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future
The theme for 2024 highlights the importance of empowering persons with disabilities to lead the way toward a more inclusive and sustainable future. The motto “Nothing About Us Without Us” captures the essence of participation, representation, and inclusion, emphasizing that persons with disabilities must actively shape decisions affecting their lives. This year’s theme underscores the role of leadership by persons with disabilities in driving these efforts, ensuring no one is left behind in the journey toward a more inclusive world.
Digital skills for digital inclusion
Digital skills are essential in today’s job market, 92% of positions require digital skills. Yet, persons with disabilities face significant barriers to acquiring these skills, limiting their employability and participation in society. Only 18% of persons with disabilities in the EU complete tertiary education compared to 39% of the general population, and just 64.3% have internet access at home, compared to 87.9% of those without disabilities. Employers often highlight digital literacy as crucial, but only 52% provide training to improve these skills, and even fewer tailor such training to employees with disabilities. Many also lack awareness of public support or funding options to make workplaces more inclusive.
Digital inclusion requires collective action. Employers must implement accessible digital training and tools like screen-reader-compatible content and keyboard navigation. Governments and policymakers must prioritize funding and awareness initiatives to bridge this gap. Empowering persons with disabilities to acquire the skills they need is not only a step toward fostering true equality but also a powerful driver of economic growth in a digital-first world. By ensuring that everyone has access to opportunities for learning and development, we create a more inclusive society where individuals can reach their full potential, contribute meaningfully, and help build thriving, resilient economies for the future.
