As digitalization continues to reshape daily life across Europe, the Digital Decade Eurobarometer survey, published in July 2024, provides critical insights into how citizens perceive these changes and what they expect in the future. This survey highlights both the benefits and challenges of digitalization, offering a comprehensive overview of the evolving digital landscape.
The Impact of Digitalization on Daily Life
Digitalization has significantly affected European citizens, with 73% reporting that digital public and private services have made their lives easier, and 19% stating it has made their lives “much easier.” However, 23% of respondents feel that digitalization has made their lives more difficult, highlighting a digital divide that suggests a need for targeted support to help everyone benefit from these changes.
The Role of Digital Technologies by 2030
Looking ahead, Europeans expect digital technologies to become even more integral by 2030. A large majority (83%) believe digital tools will be essential for connecting with others and accessing public services, while 79% expect healthcare services to rely heavily on digital platforms. Other important areas include online shopping and selling (76%), education and training (75%), and combating climate change (74%).
Notably, the perceived importance of digital technologies has increased since previous surveys, particularly in areas like fighting climate change (+8 percentage points), democratic engagement (+6 percentage points), and remote work (+6 percentage points).
Key Improvements and the Role of Public Authorities
For digital adoption to be fully effective, 80% of respondents believe that improved access to high-speed internet and better cybersecurity will be crucial. Public authorities are seen as key players in this transition, with 88% of respondents emphasizing the need for human support to help citizens navigate digital services. There is also strong support for public initiatives in research, infrastructure development, and ensuring that digital technologies align with environmental goals.
Addressing Digital Challenges
Despite the positive outlook, concerns remain. The misuse of personal data (46%) and the spread of fake news (45%) are the top issues impacting citizens. Additionally, there are concerns about the protection of minors (33%), non-trustworthy online sellers (27%), and hate speech (22%). These issues highlight the need for robust regulations and protective measures in the digital realm.
